This talk will explore the possible role of narratives in addressing contemporary socio-ecological challenges, highlighting storytelling's impact on our perception and response to environmental issues. While ecocritics explore environmental narratives, a disparity exists between their assertions and empirical evidence regarding the effects of stories. The nascent field of empirical ecocriticism seeks to bridge this gap by melding insights from environmental humanities with social sciences methodologies. The focus in this lecture lies on dystopic and utopic fiction, exploring their connection to despair and hope. The discussion explores whether balanced narratives can inspire action, steering readers away from climate anxiety and fatalism.
