SUMMARY:Bill Ashcroft (Sydney). The Multiplicity of Modernity: Post-colonial Studies and Globalization
DESCRIPTION: \n \n Prof. Bill Ashcroft is internationally recognised as a founding exponent of post- colonial theory. His book The Empire Writes Back, co-authored with Gareth Griffiths and Helen Tiffin, was the first text to examine systematically a field that is now universally referred to as "post-colonial studies". \n Is Modernity a purely western phenomenon? Did European modernity simply wash over the rest of the world in the progress of European expansion, or did different modernities develop in parallel with the West? This address will explore the ways in which a post-colonial analysis can assist us to unravel the problem of modernity and its 'others,' and uncover different possibilities for globalization. \n \n Representative publications include: \n Key Concepts in Post-colonial Studies (London: Routledge, 1998); Edward Said: the Paradox of Identity (London: Routledge, 1999); Edward Said (London: Routledge, 2001); Post-colonial Transformation (London: Routledge, 2001); On Post-colonial Futures (London: Continuum, 2001). \n Vortrag in der Reihe "Kulturtheorien", veranstaltet vom IZKT in Kooperation mit der Breuninger Stiftung und der Stadtbücherei Stuttgart. \n PODCAST des Vortrags >> \n \n
