Today, the fact that societies are constituted not only by norms and interests, but also - primarily -by collective emotions and their management, sounds obvious: emotions are omnipresent in contemporary politics. A reflection on the complex interactions between emotions, society and politics therefore seems more necessary than ever. Since the early 1990s, Eva Illouz has inspired the debate on collective emotions in different disciplines ranging from Sociology to Cultural Studies and Political Theory. Reading and re-reading her books and articles will allow us to take a closer look at continuities and discontinuities in her work. How have the theoretical frameworks developed? In what way has a shift in the research topics (e. g from capitalist consumption to populism) impacted her methodology? In our workshop, we intend to establish a deeper understanding of her contributions and their place in the contemporary debate on collective emotions. Eva Illouz will be in attendance.
Please send us a proposal by December 20th 2024.
